The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
